The European Commission’s (EC’s) Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) came into force on 18 July 2024, as part of its approach to ensuring more environmentally sustainable and circular products.
The ESPR is part of a package of EC measures, which are aimed at achieving the objectives of its 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan. The EC said it will help the European Union (EU) reach its environmental and climate goals, one of which is to double its circularity rate of material use and achieve its energy efficiency targets by 2030.
Executive VP for the European Green Deal Maroš Šefčovič said: “We’re setting the bar higher to ensure that resource – and energy-efficient products become the norm on the EU market.”
