Korean researchers have developed biodegradable nylon-like fibres using Escherichia coli (E. coli).

The team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology produced eco-friendly fibres using microbes for sustainable materials. Publishing in the international academic journal ‘Nature Chemical Biology’ on 18 March, the researchers created biodegradable plastic fibres using E. coli.

According to Plastics Europe, the global production of plastics reached approximately 400.3m metric tons in 2022. Due to plastics’ petroleum origin,
