Canadian athletic brand Lululemon has announced a multi-year collaboration with California, US-based biotechnology company ZymoChem to expand its use of bio-based nylon and advance its leadership in sustainable innovation.
In a press release, on 19 March, Lululemon said together with ZymoChem it will sustainably transform a key building block of nylon 6,6 – a foundational material used in many of its products.
Established in 2013, ZymoChem converts renewable feedstocks into biodegradable polymers using microbes. This process has significant less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, compared to traditional petrochemical manufacturing processes. The company claims its technology is not only an alternative to petroleum-derived nylon as a sustainable choice but also provides cost savings.
Aligning with Lululemon’s long-term sustainability initiatives, which aims to decrease the dependence on fossil fuel-based materials, ZymoChem also claims to exceed customer expectations regarding performance and durability.
